Lexapro

There has been a link reported with taking SSRI drugs during pregnancy and birth defects in newborns.

Lexapro is an antidepressant that falls into this category because of this, many women that have taken this drug during pregnancy have experienced having babies born with serious heart, skull or abdominal defects.

Lexapro during pregnancy has been known to cause the following conditions:

  • Club foot
  • Spina bifida
  • Omphalocele
  • Craniosynostosis (skull defect)
  • Heart defects
  • Aorta coarctation
  • Tetralogy of fallot (TOF)
  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome
  • Transposition of the great arteries (TGA)

Of all of the studies performed on this subject, one in particular found that SSRI medications taken in the last half of pregnancy were 6 times more likely to have a baby with heart defects, specifically Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN).

The maker of Lexapro were negligent in putting out adequate warnings for pregnant women of this devastating side effect and therefore, could be entitled to financial compensation for medical bill and other damages resulting in these birth defects due to this manufacturer’s actions. However, parents seeking restitution need to know that all SSRI injury cases have a time limit and should be acted on this immediately.
